14ch4 Emissions from Nuclear Power Plants in Northwestern Europe

چکیده
We measured the 14( content of atmospheric methane at a 200-m-high sampling station in The Netherlands. Combined with trajectories and a transport model, it is possible to estimate the 14CH4 emissions from nuclear power plants in northwestern Europe. We demonstrate here two different methods of analyzing the data: forward modeling and an inverse method. Our data suggest that the emissions from pressurized water reactors are 260 ± 50 GBq per GW installed power per year, ca. 1.6 ± 0.4 times higher than generally assumed. We also find that, in addition to the known nuclear sources of 14CH4 (pressurized and boiling water reactors), there are two very strong sources of 14CH4 (520 ± 200 and 1850 ± 450 GBq yr-1, respectively), probably two test reactors near the sampling station.

Effect of power plant emission reductions on a nearby wilderness area: a case study in northwestern Colorado.
This study evaluates the effect of emission reductions at two coal-fired power plants in northwestern Colorado on a nearby wilderness area. Control equipment was installed at both plants during 1999-2004 to reduce SO2 and NOx emissions. One challenge was separating the effects of local from regional emissions, which also declined during the study period. The long-term datasets examined confirm ...

Climate solutions – nuclear vs sustainable pathways • Energy efficiency represents an economic bonanza, which will enable a significant share of energy demand to be provided by renewable sources and allowing nuclear power to be phased out. • The biggest single obstacle to improving energy efficiency is that in most countries, utilities are rewarded for selling more energy. We need to reward the...

1 Six new NPPs were connected to the grid in 2000, three in 2001 and six in 2002. Figure 1 summarises world nuclear experience as of December 2002. Looking ahead to nuclear power’s prospects in the new century, four features stand out: 1. New nuclear power plants are not being built fast enough to maintain nuclear power’s 16% share of global electricity generation. 2. Current expansion, as well...

The nuclear meltdown in Fukushima has given renewed momentum to the anti-nuclear power movement across Europe. However, the degree of momentum varies greatly from country to country, and considering the geographically widespread consequences of a nuclear accident, it hardly appears optimal for one country to ban nuclear power while multiple nuclear power plants are still active in neighbouring ...
متن کاملValuing the greenhouse gas emissions from nuclear power: A critical survey
This article screens 103 lifecycle studies of greenhouse gas-equivalent emissions for nuclear power plants to identify a subset of the most current, original, and transparent studies. It begins by briefly detailing the separate components of the nuclear fuel cycle before explaining the methodology of the survey and exploring the variance of lifecycle estimates. It calculates that while the rang...
